Hadrien Loumaye

The series Bouquet of Flowers and Postcard Paintings show different variations of the same subject. Beyond a colored declination of the same motif, the pictorial handling oscillates between abstract and stylized paintings, reminding the stylistic researches of diverse artistic movements. The bouquet of flowers is indeed an academic and classical theme as well as an object of exploration in the way of painting for the European avant-garde. It was the hobbyhorse of the Modernists to create formal deconstruction. As the bouquet is an ultimate subject of painting, here it acts as a non-subject as it has been represented so many times. As a result it makes us focus mainly on the painterly gestures. These series play with the decorative aspect of the painting, through its subject matter (a photography taken on internet to give a sense of impersonality) but also through the choice of the color palette purposely watered down. More broadly, it proposes a reflection on what is considered good taste or kitsch.
